- In astronomy, the alignment of two celestial
- bodies so that they have the same position as
- seen from Earth. Inferior conjunction occurs
- when an inferior planet (or other object)
- passes between the Earth and Sun, and has an
- identical right ascension to the Sun.
- Superior conjunction occurs when a superior
- planet (or other object) passes behind, or on
- the far side of, the Sun, and has the same
- right ascension as the Sun. Planetary
- conjunction takes place when a planet is
- closely aligned with another celestial
- object, such as the Moon, a star, or another
- planet, as seen from Earth. Because the
- orbital planes of the inferior planets are
- tilted with respect to the Earth, an inferior
- planet usually passes either above or below
- the Sun as seen from Earth. If they line up
- exactly, a transit will occur.
